Extended Primary/
Kindergarten Program
The Extended Primary/Kindergarten program is
designed for children in their last year at
Children's Garden. To join the Extended Primary/Kindergarten
class, a child must be 4½ by September 30th,
have been in a Montessori pre-school program,
and have a teacher recommendation. Children
who are 5 years old and are in their kindergarten
year have priority.
In this final year at Children's Garden, children
have developed confidence and a sense of accomplishment
and serve as models for younger children.
The Extended Primary/K children attend from
8:15 am to 2:15 pm; they spend the morning
in one of our mixed age primary classrooms
until lunchtime, at which time the older children
from both primary classrooms join together
to have lunch and spend the afternoon together.
Having a smaller group of just older children
allows for more advanced, age appropriate
exploration of each of the Montessori areas.
A smaller group of older children allows for
reading long chapter books out loud, taking
walks around the Cherry Creek neighborhood,
as well as eagerly exploring reading, writing,
mathematical calculations, geography, science
and art. To capitalize on the developmental
benefits to both the older and younger children
at Children's Garden we invite one Ext.P/K
child at a time to assist in our toddler program.
Five and six year olds enjoy working together,
so we give them additional time in Zach's
Place so that they may collaborate on larger
open-ended art projects of their own design.
