Ward Hobbs October/November Update

Greetings from WHAM,

We love this time of year at school, with the promise of autumn and colder temperatures on the way. Early October was a time to talk about why the leaves change color; hibernating animals and putting our gardens to sleep for the winter. Our final harvest from the garden included: Japanese eggplant, chocolate peppers, radish, cucumbers, potatoes and green tomatoes. The children were very enthusiastic when asked to weed, hoe and mulch the beds, in preparation for spring planting. A special thanks to Waitman J., for helping me finish this enormous project! We used the tomatoes to make a green tomato chutney to share with our families.
We enjoyed our annual visit from the fire fighters from station 15, on October the 16th. They talked to the group about fire safety … “get out and stay out”, then demonstrated how fire personnel look in and out of their fire proof gear. The children were then invited to touch the fireman in full uniform, with a few brave toddlers rising to the occasion.
Grandparent’s day is tomorrow and we invite you to visit any time after 9 in the morning. You are welcome to stay as long as you’d like, with class time ending around 11 am. If Grandparents are not available to visit any special friend will do. Another option to think about in the future is our holiday party in December, on the last day of school before break. Please save the date as more information will follow after conferences.
Another fun unit of study has been centered on the artist, Vincent Van Gogh. Parents often ask what they can do to supplement our activities at school? This is a wonderful opportunity for you to take your children to the exhibit at the art museum, and see what they have learned about this very prolific artist.
Conferences are quickly approaching at the end of the month. We look forward to meeting with you to celebrate your child’s unique contribution to our community.
